This is post #7 from the series My Startup Journey where I share the LifeHQ startup journey. The current status of LifeHQ: It is in Beta with around 200 users, but 0 paying users. This is your chance to follow my journey while facing uncertainties and obstacles left and right while building my first business. I share what I’m working on, what fires I’m putting out, what obstacles I’m facing, both real and imaginary and my plans for the future.

When comparing yourself to others can be a good thing

First, let’s get this out of the way. I’m not talking about comparing yourself with rich people on instagram or famous celebrities or multi-millionaire entrepreneurs.

The comparison I’m referring to is the natural human behavior of comparing themselves with the people around them. You’ve all heard you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. This is true for your health, your mindset, your relationships and your success.

It is happening on the subconscious level but when you have friends that are making money, you start believing you can make the same money as well. Or if all your friends are at the gym 5 times per week, you will be going too.

When it comes to productivity and the Mission of LifeHQ to create 1 Million Millionaires you need to be comparing yourself with others in terms of daily productivity and consistency.

You need to be comparing yourself to people playing the same game as you. Otherwise it’s pointless.

But when starting a side project or a business you are doing it by yourself. There are no 5 people around you also working on their business, for most of us. That’s one of the reasons these business accelerator programs work, because you are around people who work all day just like you.

Tackling this problem at LifeHQ

Every user on LifeHQ is already chasing their dreams and working on them every day. This is who you need to be comparing yourself to, not in terms of money or status but in terms of daily accomplishments and productivity.

My idea is to show how many people are working right now (all anonymous at the beginning) and how much they are accomplishing. You will see how many tasks they are completing on average and how many pomodoro sessions they are running in a day. This will make you do more.

In the future we will have a reputation system, monthly or weekly work challenges and other fun stuff.

About this series

I have been trying to write one of these articles every day I’m working on LifeHQ, which is around 5-6 days per week. However yesterday I missed the mark, so that’s why today I’ll be posting two articles. One for yesterday and one for today.

At first I thought there is no way I could write an article almost every day. But when sharing my journey it is so easy, I just answer few questions and the article writes itself. I just need to do something that day.

Here are my template questions:

  • The highlight
  • What I did today.
  • Plans for tomorrow.
  • Current setbacks
  • Thoughts about the future

I will always start with the most interesting thing I have to say for that day. If I put that in the bottom no one will read it. And I will not answer all questions every time.

What I did today

I mostly finished the backend for pricing. Implementing this with Paddle has been quite easy so far.

Started working on the design of the pricing page, will share what that looks like tonight. It’s a bit unconventional, but bold.

Setbacks

I have been going to bed between 11pm and 12pm and getting up early around 5 for the past few weeks and it finally caught up to me. Getting up early is only half of the equation, the other half is going to bed early 🙂

So yesterday I had to sleep about 2 hours in the middle of the day, split into three sessions. I didn’t do this on purpose, simply while working I fell asleep. It’s crazy. But the body needs what it needs.

Plans for tomorrow and the future

Beside the pricing page, I think the landing page needs a bit of a refresh and then I’ll be ready to launch. I just need to agree with myself how much I want to implement of the gamification system I mentioned at the beginning. I think it is necessary for user retention.

That’s it for today.

Until next time.

Stay hungry.
